ABOUT LISA

Thank you for exploring art — I love it too. My interest begins with literature, with the love of language and poetics that are as compelling as visual art. The dream of owning a gallery goes back to my 20s in Montreal, following the art scene from museum to gallery to alternative hangouts.

The brand Black Pony dropped out of a book and I have kept it in my pocket ever since. It’s a symbol of adventure, of creative and energetic expression. I designed the logo, an original silkscreen, thanks to the help of an artist friend (and the public domaine).

Presently, Black Pony Gallery is an online gallery listed with Artsy. Being online allows me to reach a global audience while furthering relationships in the region. The catalogue of contemporary artwork offered by Black Pony Gallery features a diverse range of expressions, mediums, and price points. It is important to note that contemporary Caribbean art and contemporary artwork from the wider Atlantic is finally receiving great attention. This moment of transition likely represents one of the best times to make an investment in artistic talent from the region.

In my literary mind, I envision the artwork in the gallery collection as a whole body of work, telling its own story of the Atlantic World, presenting its own characters, determining its own setting, tensions and triumphs. The Atlantic corridor, from the Azores to Trinidad, is a fascinating geographical space. The intertwined cultural and historical narratives of the Islands, with so many intersections across so many centuries, is its own discourse and art market. This consideration led me to create the Atlantic World Art Fair, also online Artsy.

The Atlantic World Art Fair is the only online art market dedicated to contemporary Caribbean art and artwork from the Atlantic World. Started in 2020, the fair has grown from 9 to 12 gallery partners and will continue to evolve in 2023. Each iteration we present a program of panel discussions, critical commentary and artist talks that are archived on YouTube. Please check it out.

Thanks to your interest, more contemporary artists from the Caribbean and Atlantic World will be recognized, collected and featured in international exhibitions, fairs and creative projects. Please enjoy!
